There's a material security issue involved here too and it's rather important to pay attention to it unless, of course, you don't care who has your phone book and calendar entries - which are often quite a bit more interesting to someone than your email is! For single-PC contact/calendar sync there's a problem in that everyone seems to have abandoned any sort of "connector" software for the PC (whether Windows or Mac) to do this directly over USB cable. My Exchange setup runs on top of that (Postfix/Dovecot are the underlying), using Z-Push (I've made a few local modifications) and it works very nicely.

The application is not free, so its value has to be taken into consideration, but, in this case, it does not present an issue. A robust application with a fine degree of control, limited only by what devices it can support The application also includes a detailed automatic synchronization options, users can select how often and at what specific time of day it occurs, so the transfer doesn’t interfere with day to day usage of the device.
